There’s been a lot of talk in recent years about how the HIPAA privacy law is affecting health care institutions. Those hospitals with lagging compliance efforts should be plenty nervous, as the federal government has stepped up audits…Also, while much has been said about the new health care reform law, there has been little written about how it might affect insurance agents.
Much has been written in the press recently about the constitutionality of the individual mandate under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010 and whether the Supreme Court, which heard oral arguments on the health care reform law in late March, will rule the mandate unconstitutional, thus striking down all or a portion of the landmark legislation.
The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) has fundamentally changed the health care industry’s privacy and security practices. However, the federal government’s enforcement efforts historically have been complaint-driven and sporadic.
