In the years since the Enron scandal and the Sarbanes-Oxley Act, chief executive officers and chief financial officers have made headlines as the targets of criminal investigations. But increasingly, chief legal officers have found themselves in the same spotlight.

“Liability is increasingly being imposed or sought against lawyers – particularly by the Securities and Exchange Commission and to some extent by the Department of Justice,” said Frederick J. Krebs, president of the Washington-based Association of Corporate Counsel. “You have to pay attention to it. Liability is a significant concern of ours.”
