Miguel Miranda v. Safeco Insurance: Miguel Miranda, of New Britain, had his right knee replaced in 2006. Two years later, he found himself standing on the brakes as hard as that knee would allow as his vehicle was rear-ended in traffic. The minor fender bender seemed like no big deal at the time but after another knee surgery and a subsequent infection, Miranda, 59, passed away in 2010, just days before Christmas.

His lawyer, David B. Hartshorn, of Marinelli, Sauer & Hartshorn in New Britain, had the task of trying to convince a jury earlier this year that Miranda’s untimely death stemmed from that minor car crash in 2008. “I compared it on closing [argument] to someone who just carelessly discards a match and starts a wildfire,” said Hartshorn.
