A self-described “disbarred and disgraced” former attorney on Monday filed what appears to be the first civil lawsuit authorized under a new Texas abortion law, after a doctor in the state said he performed the procedure in violation of the measure.

The lawsuit will be a new test of the Texas law, which is not an outright ban on abortions but rather authorizes civil lawsuits against abortion providers and others who knowingly assist those who obtain the procedures. The U.S. Supreme Court permitted the law to go into effect on a 5-4 vote, with Chief Justice John Roberts joining the court’s liberals in saying he would have temporarily stopped it, and the U.S. Justice Department has since brought its own challenge to the law.
