Among the names President Donald Trump is considering to replace Justice Anthony Kennedy on the U.S. Supreme Court is former Kennedy clerk Brett Kavanaugh, a veteran on Washington’s most-known federal appeals court and a former White House lawyer with deep conservative credentials.

Kavanaugh, a judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit, was not identified on the first Trump White House short list for the Supreme Court but was subsequently added last year. Kavanaugh is among 25 names on Trump’s list of would-be nominees, and is reportedly a leading contender. Kavanaugh, at 53, would fit the mold of a young, strongly conservative associate justice.
