Demers, a vice president and assistant general counsel at Boeing, previously served as a top official in the national security division during the George W. Bush administration. According to his biography on Boeing’s website, Demers led a Justice Department group responsible for updating federal surveillance law and for preparing and presenting the department’s legal positions before the Washington-based Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court.
A Harvard Law School graduate and former clerk to the late Justice Antonin Scalia, Demers had previously worked in the Boston office of Ropes & Gray. President Donald Trump nominated Demers on Sept. 1 for the DOJ assistant attorney general position.
