There’s a lot of untapped talent that Amazon.com Inc.’s legal department can now access because of a program that helps women attorneys re-enter the workforce after taking time off, according to David Zapolsky, senior vice president, general counsel and secretary at Seattle-based Amazon. This program, which can be very valuable for legal departments, is a “no-lose proposition,” he said.
Amazon’s legal department was recognized Tuesday at the Association of Corporate Counsel Foundation’s Global Women in Law & Leadership event as the first legal department to implement the OnRamp Fellowship. The program, which started in law firms and has now expanded to include six legal departments, aims to help women return to the legal profession by way of a yearlong fellowship in a legal department or law firm with the possibility of a permanent position after.
