In a recent speech at New York University School of Law, U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission Chair Mary Jo White touted the agency’s record enforcement successes and credited the use of data analytics to identify and investigate misconduct, which she called “transformative.”

“More than ever, the SEC is developing in-house innovative analytical tools to take advantage of today’s data-rich environment,” said White, who took the helm of the SEC in 2013 but will leave at the end of President Barack Obama’s term. “The result is that the number of cases we are able to originate in-house has risen dramatically.” In each of the last three years, the SEC has broken its previous record for the number of cases brought, she said.
