A patent lawyer’s opportunities to find work in-house are far fewer than their opportunities to work at a law firm, a new survey confirms. Less than 24 percent of patent attorneys work in-house, according to recent findings from online platform Patexia Inc.
By looking at a list of patent practitioners released by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office on July 12, the Patexia team determined that only about 25 percent of patent practitioners—which includes both patent agents and patent attorneys—work in-house. When looking just at active patent attorneys, the in-house number was under 24 percent. The report found that patent practitioners with 15 to 16 years of experience were more than 35 percent of those working in-house. Fewer than 10 percent of patent practitioners had zero to two years of experience.
