It’s an inside-out notion: the best way for a general counsel to build influence at her company is to leave the office. This advice comes from Adrian Goss, general counsel at Bauer Media and national president of ACC Australia. He told Stefanie Garber of Lawyers Weekly, “You need to get out of your office and out from behind your emails and get in front of people to build those personal relationships.”

It’s this face time that really counts, says Goss. He suggests taking more time to build interpersonal relationships and really listen to what people across the business are saying about current issues and challenges. Then, when people need advice or seek contributions to overall strategy, the GC’s initial legwork is already done.
