Contrary to popular opinion, patent attorneys have very active imaginations and are very creative. Many of us long for a better, more efficient patent system, and the emergence of advanced computing systems presents an opportunity for those in the patent realm to work together toward that end. So it is only natural for IBM patent attorneys to ponder, as part of that effort, ways to apply the advanced analytics and processing capabilities of a cognitive computing system such as IBM Watson.

After winning the “Jeopardy!” Challenge in 2011, Watson has proven its ability to help experts in health care, finance, retail and other industries. Watson even is helping chefs come up with new, delectable recipes from seemingly incongruous ingredients. Additional applications for Watson are limited only by one’s imagination, which is why the legal industry is the latest field considering how Watson’s analytics and natural language processing can be of assistance.
