The U.S. Department of Labor is moving toward ordering federal contractors and subcontractors to reveal statistics on employee compensation by race, sex and ethnicity as part of President Barack Obama’s effort to encourage equal pay in the workplace.

The agency on Friday will publish in the Federal Register a proposed rule that would require contractors to submit to the Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs an annual “Equal Pay Report” that summarizes wages for women and minorities by job functions. Only companies that have more than 100 employees and at least $50,000 in government contracts would have to comply with the directive.
