It’s not easy being green—especially for oil giant BP plc.

The company has tried for more than 22 years to obtain a trademark in Australia for the green color that dominates its logo. But according to the U.K. newspaper The Guardian, IP Australia, the Australian government agency that administers intellectual property rights, ruled last week that the company failed to show “convincing evidence” that it is indelibly linked in the mind of the average gasoline consumer with the dark shade of green known as Pantone 348C.
