Legal department cost-control initiatives are nothing new in the United States or in the United Kingdom, for that matter. But, according to Joanne Harris in The Lawyer, the trend is now taking hold in African companies. She says that GCs at major African organizations say they’re increasingly able to control their spending and bring work in-house.

Harris says that research for The Lawyer Africa Elite 2014 shows legal teams in Africa’s largest companies remain fairly small and outside counsel are used on more of a “preferred relationship” than a formal panel basis.
