You get the feeling that Apple Inc. and U.S. District Judge Denise Cote did not exchange holiday greeting cards last year. As Christmas approached, the tech giant and the judge, who sits in Manhattan, were butting heads in the wake of Cote’s finding in July that Apple had illegally fixed e-book prices.

The focus of their dispute in December was Michael Bromwich of Goodwin Procter, who is the monitor Cote appointed to ensure that Apple complies with antitrust laws while the company awaits her ruling on damages. In its court papers, Apple sought to freeze Bromwich’s activities pending a decision on its appeal of her verdict to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit.
