The Federal Trade Commission on Monday filed a lawsuit seeking to block Kroger’s $24.6 billion acquisition of grocery rival Albertsons, a megadeal that’s been in the works since October 2022.
The agency teamed with eight states and the District of Columbia in filing the suit, which charged that the combination would lead to higher prices and lower-quality products for consumers.

Kroger and Albertsons say the real threat to the grocery industry are mega-retailers like Amazon, Costco and Walmart.
