The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission lacks  the legal authority to mandate that publicly traded companies disclose greenhouse gas emissions, House Republicans said Thursday in criticizing a proposed SEC rule.

“Congress created the SEC to protect investors, maintain fair, orderly, and efficient markets and facilitate capital formation—not to advance a progressive climate agenda,” said Rep. Bill Huizenga, R-Michigan and chair of the House Financial Services Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations.
