Legal departments only can do so much to reduce workloads. After all, legal chiefs probably had to fight for every position on staff, and in this economic environment avoiding job cuts might even be a victory of sorts.

Those heavy workloads are dragging down many attorneys, both at law firms and at legal departments, according to ALM’s annual Mental Health Survey released Thursday. In fact, 85% of in-house respondents said the legal profession has had a negative effect on their mental health over time.
