Experts warn that quantum computers are getting closer to being able to crack encryption, putting swaths of sensitive data at risk to digital miscreants as it flows across the internet.

The Cloud Security Alliance’s countdown to “Y2Q” clock will hit zero in 2030, the same year the U.S. Department of Homeland Security predicts that a quantum breakthrough will occur, posing a new threat to the means by which companies secure their customer data, business transactions and confidential communications.
