The first day of the criminal fraud trial against Elizabeth Holmes focused on keeping COVID-19 and biased depictions of the famed Theranos founder out of the courtroom.

Holmes, whose trial kicked off on Tuesday in San Jose after several delays because of the COVID-19 pandemic and the birth of her first child, has been the subject of bestselling books, documentaries and a swell of media attention during the rise and demise of her defunct biotech company. In 2018, the government indicted Holmes amid allegations that she defrauded investors, doctors and patients about the efficacy of Theranos’ blood-testing technology.
