In-house counsel in China traditionally have not been viewed as a core component of business strategy. This has changed massively in recent years as more companies have allowed their in-house teams a bigger say in major decision-making.

Myra Gao, a Chinese lawyer and head of legal at Danfoss China, does not silo herself within the legal function of her company, which is part of the biggest multinational company in Denmark. She believes the key to being a successful in-house counsel in China today is to act as legal business partners, equipped with a strong understanding of what is happening more broadly in the world.
