John P. Carlin

Partner & Chair
Morrison & Foerster LLP

John P. Carlin chairs Morrison & Foerster’s Global Risk Crisis Management practice, counseling clients on cyber and other national security matters, white collar investigations, and government enforcement actions.

He previously served as the Assistant Attorney General for National Security, the Department of Justice’s top national security lawyer, overseeing nearly 400 employees responsible for protecting the nation against terrorism, espionage, and cyber and other national security threats. In this capacity, Mr. Carlin oversaw the investigation into the attack on Sony Entertainment’s computer systems and launched a nationwide cross-industry campaign to encourage greater C-suite involvement in corporate cyber security matters. 

Prior to that, he served as Chief of Staff and Senior Counsel to FBI Director Robert S. Mueller III and as National Coordinator of DOJ’s Computer Hacking and Intellectual Property (CHIP) program.

He earned his Juris Doctorate from Harvard Law School, where he received the Samuel J. Heyman Fellowship for Federal Government Service and served as Articles editor for the Harvard Journal on Legislation, and earned his Bachelor of Arts degree, magna cum laude, from Williams College, where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa.

Marian A. Waldmann Agarwal is a member of the market-leading Privacy Data Security team at Morrison & Foerster, where she advises clients regarding the collection, use, disclosure, and transfer of personal information as they seek to comply with U.S. and international privacy and data protection laws. She regularly manages global compliance projects, including privacy program assessments, and counsels on privacy litigation and enforcement actions. Ms. Waldmann also assists clients in responding to data breach incidents, including with regard to compliance with state data breach notification laws.
