Opioid, sexual abuse and asbestos cases have been all over the news in the last few years. This panel of experts will discuss and analyze the complex issues involved in mass tort chapter 11 cases today, including current issues involving future claims, nonconsensual releases and plan-confirmation issues.

This panel will discuss issues that arise at the crossroads of sexual abuse claims and chapter 11, including the tension caused by using a financial reorganization tool to resolve highly emotional personal-injury claims, the stresses that cases of this ilk place on the Bankruptcy Code (including the uniqueness of claims bar dates in cases of this sort, nonprofit debtors and the absolute priority rule, and the propriety of third-party releases), and the use of mediation to globally resolve these cases.

The program will focus on Federal Civil Rights Acts, Titles VII and IX and provide attendees with the knowledge of Federal and select State and City laws and codes involved with these sexual discrimination and sexual misconduct cases.

Forty-four states have enacted pay-equity laws since the Pay Equity Act of 1963, but despite the well-intentioned progress, we still have a long way to go to achieve laws that are effective for employees and feasible for companies to comply. In this powerhouse closing session, we will discuss how far we’ve come with pay equity law, as well as what we can do to truly reach sustainable pay equity in this country.

Incivility in the legal profession is not a new concern. But workplace abuse and bullying involve behavior akin to domestic violence, including psychological aggression, dominance, and control. What are the key components of workplace abuse? How are targets harmed and traumatized? What is the impact of workplace abuse on the ethical practice of law, lawyer well-being, and the performance of lawyers and organizations? The panel will discuss these questions and more.

This seminar will provide an introduction to concepts relating to trauma and race, leading up to a four-part model that guides legal advocates to tangibly engage in a trauma-informed, anti-racist approach to legal advocacy.

Registrants of the seminar will learn about the historical context of discrimination in regards to poverty and race, the existence of discrimination in the justice system, disparities in bail, jury selection, & conviction, and alleviating the role of poverty and racial bias.

This panel examines how we can assure that the nation, indeed humanity, does not fail. It will examine the history of black representation in space; discuss the impact of the civil rights movement on national and international space law; and offer strategies for lawyers to foster inclusion in commercial contracts as well as the workplace.

This panel will address the workplace impact of violence and strategies to assist victims of crime and survivors.
