Twenty-five firms had growth rates of at least 10 percent, up from 20 in 2016. Norton Rose led the way with a 32.3 percent leap in PPP. Two firms (Crowell & Moring and Jenner & Block) had double-digit declines, fewer than the five firms that saw double-digit declines in 2016.

Thirty-one firms posted gross revenue over $1 billion in 2017, four more than in 2016. Eighty-five reported gains, up from 82 last year. Kirkland reported the biggest gain, 19.4 percent. K&L Gates had the steepest decline, 16.1 percent.

Average Compensation–All Partners rose by 5.3 percent in 2017, compared with an increase of 1.6 percent in 2016. Seventy-nine firms posted increases, compared with 71 the previous year. Nineteen firms posted double-digit gains, while three posted double-digit losses.

Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz has led this ranking since the metric's inception in 2005. At that firm, each lawyer contributed an average of $1.9 million in 2017, and it took an average of 5.3 lawyers to generate $10 million.

Our Profitability Index metric looks at a firm's ability to convert revenue into profits. This metric, introduced in 1985, seeks to demonstrate which firms best balance leverage and profit margin for the highest possible profits per partner.

For the Am Law 100 as a whole, average revenue per lawyer, the metric that we've long regarded as the most reliable measure of a firm's financial health, increased by 3.2 percent, higher than the 1.5 percent increase at Am Law 100 firms in 2016.

Profits per lawyer is an alternate way of looking at firm profitability, and is intended to reduce the influence of factors such as leverage. A firm's PPL is its net income divided by its lawyer count. Wachtell topped the list with a PPL of $1,897,000.

Baylor University School of Law posted the highest ultimate bar pass rate—all 109 of its 2015 grads who took the bar passed over the span of two years. The University of Detroit Mercy School of Law had the lowest ultimate bar pass rate in 2015, at just under 57 percent.
