A Washington, D.C.-based lawyer who once mounted an ill-fated legal battle claiming he was the father of basketball star LeBron James was disbarred Thursday in his home district after a disciplinary board found he intentionally misappropriated client funds and provided shoddy representation.

The lawyer, Leicester Bryce Stovell, made news several years ago in connection with a lawsuit in which he represented himself and claimed to be James’ father. In that 2010 suit, Stovell accused the National Basketball Association star and his mother Gloria James of conspiring to conceal the identity of James’ true father. After a DNA test contradicted Stovell’s assertion, his suit ended up failing when a judge found that, among other issues, Stovell hadn’t shown that he suffered any damages.
