On April 26, 2010, actress Uma Thurman stormed into the Manhattan office of her financial adviser, Kenneth Starr. Thurman’s bank had called her three days earlier to ask about a mysterious $1 million transfer out of her personal account into Starr’s lawyer’s account. The heroine of Pulp Fiction and the Kill Bill movies arrived at Starr’s office and demanded her money back. She was accompanied by an entourage that included lawyers from Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison and Grubman Indursky & Shire. Starr told the group that he ultimately planned to invest the money on the actress’s behalf. Thurman asked Starr to contact his lawyer, Jonathan Bristol, and get her money back. After leaving the room several times, Starr told Thurman and her lawyers that Bristol was unreachable by phone or e-mail.
Thurman and company decided to contact Bristol, a corporate partner at Winston & Strawn’s Manhattan office, on their own. They used a BlackBerry to look up his office number, entered a private conference room in Starr’s office, dialed, and got straight through to him.
