This is the 2016 A-List, our 14th annual ranking of Big Law’s elite. These are 20 firms that excel in four vital areas: financial success, pro bono commitment, diversity and associate satisfaction. These firms are firing on all cylinders.

Any Am Law 200 firm is eligible for the A-List. We compile the A-List by assigning each firm a score based on its performance in four key rankings. They are:

• Our Am Law 200 survey’s revenue per lawyer rankings,

• Our pro bono survey, which measures average pro bono hours per lawyer and breadth of firm participation in pro bono,

• Our diversity survey, which ranks firms by their percentage of minority lawyers, and

• Our midlevel survey, which measures associate job satisfaction.

We give each firm a score on a 1-to-200 scale based on its rank in each area, which 200 being the highest possible score. The scores for revenue per lawyer and pro bono are doubled.

Moving on to this year’s list are Jenner & Block, Covington & Burling and Willkie Farr & Gallagher. They displace Hughes Hubbard & Reed, Williams & Connolly and Weil, Gotshal & Manges.

The list skews toward large, geographically diversified firms. Half of the firms on this year’s list are national firms, and one is an international firm. Rounding out the list are four New York firms, three Los Angeles firms, and one firm each in Chicago and Washington, D.C.

But size alone isn’t necessarily the key to A-List success. This year’s list includes three Second Hundred firms, including this year’s No. 1, Los Angeles’ Irell & Manella, with 126 lawyers. These are capsule summaries of each of this year’s 20 A-List firms. Our report also includes a close look at Irell and a quick review of the runners-up, firms 21-40 on our rankings.
