Building on a 13 percent gain in gross revenue in 2012, Fenwick & West increased gross another 5.8 percent, to $274.5 million, in 2013. Revenue per lawyer climbed 5.3 percent, to $985,000, while profits per partner rose 4.1 percent, to $1.275 million.

“It was a particularly strong year for transactions, as well as securities litigation and patent litigation, but each of our core practice areas contributed meaningfully to our revenue growth,” says chairman Richard Dickson. The Mountain View, Calif., firm worked on 10 initial public offerings for Silicon Valley tech companies or their underwriters in 2013. It also represented Cisco Systems Inc. in a slew of acquisitions, including those of Sourcefire for $2.7 billion and Intucell for $475 million. “Momentum really started building in May and continued building throughout the year,” Dickson says.
