Plenty of Am Law 100 firms reported lower revenues and profits in 2013, as a glance at the charts in this issue will show. Bingham McCutchen and Weil, Gotshal & Manges, though, caught our attention. Neither is used to this kind of pain: Both were strong performers during the recession, marking solid financial results as many of their peers scrambled to cut costs. But now, as profits drop, Bingham and Weil find themselves confronting many of the same challenges. And while both have crafted strategies to redefine themselves, targeted key practice areas for growth and nudged—sometimes pushed—less profitable lawyers out the door, not everything has gone according to plan.
