Australian law firm HWL Ebsworth has announced plans to open in Perth through a merger with 26-lawyer Downings Legal.

The combination becomes effective July 1. All six Downings partners —managing partner Mitch Artus, Joyce Chin, Lynnette Goh, Veronica Jumeaux, Andrew Davidson and Keith Thomas—will become partners at HWL Ebsworth.

Downings, which operates only in Perth, specializes in construction, property, and commercial matters, as well as litigation. Artus, Chin, Goh, and Jumeaux practice in the commercial and property areas, while Davidson and Thomas focus on litigation.

Though relatively small, it has a history dating back to 1897, when it was founded by Henry Downing and Norman Ewing, the latter of whom would go on to become a prominent politician.

The addition of Downings Legal brings HWL Ebsworth’s total headcount to 511 lawyers, including 154 partners. The firm also has offices in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, and Canberra.
