Rajah & Tann has entered into a non-exclusive strategic alliance with Jakarta’s Assegaf Hamzah & Partners, one of Indonesia’s largest law firms.
Singapore’s largest law firm with 370 lawyers, Rajah & Tann has in recent years embarked on an ambitious plan to expand throughout Southeast Asia. Over the past two years, it has opened offices in Vietnam, Thailand, Myanmar, Laos, and Cambodia.
Foreign firms are not permitted to have offices in Indonesia, so many have opted for alliances with local firms. DLA Piper likewise announced earlier this week it was forming an alliance with Jakarta’s Ivan Almaida Baely & Firmansyah Law Firm
Assegaf Hamzah, which has 60 lawyers, was founded in 2001 and focuses on capital markets and finance deals. Earlier this year, Assegaf Hamzah advised Indonesian fertilizer producer PT Panca Amara Utama on its contract with Japan’s Toyo Engineering Corp. to build a $750 million ammonia plant. The firm also acted for the underwriters on Indonesian integrated energy company PT Indika Energy Tbk.’s $500 million issue of high-yield notes on the Singapore Exchange.
