Atlanta-based King & Spalding has hired a new partner for its energy practice in Singapore.

Merrick White was formerly a partner at Clifford Chance, where he specialized in transactions in the oil and gas industry.

In May, White led the Clifford Chance team that advised Indian refiner Nagarjuna Oil Ltd. on its acceptance of a $130 million investment by Singapore-based petroleum company Trafigura Pte. Ltd.

White joined Clifford Chance in Singapore in 2003 as consultant and became a partner last year. Prior to becoming a lawyer, White, a trained chemical engineer, worked in Southeast Asia in marketing and engineering positions at several of major oil companies.

King & Spalding’s Singapore branch, which counts three partners and two associates, opened in 2010 and is the Atlanta-based firm’s only Asian office. It serves as a hub for the firm’s energy and international arbitration practice in Asia. The firm has over 800 lawyers working in 17 offices worldwide.
