Thanks to the stagnant economy, much of the legal industry is stuck in neutral. But there is one practice area showing movement: labor and employment.

While demand for legal services, which is measured by growth in billable hours, fell 0.2 percent in the second quarter of this year compared to the same quarter in 2011, there’s been an uptick in labor and employment work. According to the Hilde­brandt Institute’s Peer Monitor Economic Index, over that same period of time, demand for labor and employment work increased 4.7 percent, compared to corporate, real estate, and bankruptcy work, which shrank 2.1 percent, 3 percent, and 3 percent, respectively.
