Palo Alto-based Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati has hired a new partner for its China practice. Zhan Chen, a corporate lawyer, joins Wilson Sonsini from Davis Polk & Wardwell, where she was a Hong Kong-based counsel.

Chen will work primarily in Wilson Sonsini’s Shanghai office, but will also spend a significant amount of her time in the firm’s Hong Kong branch. The hire is a boost for the firm following the departure of two Shanghai-based partners–Eva Wang and Michelle Edwards–to Covington & Burling in February.

Chen’s practice focuses on private equity, foreign direct investment and cross-border mergers and acquisitions. Last year, Chen advised Stable Investment Corp., a subsidiary of Chinese sovereign wealth fund China Investment Corp., and CITIC Capital China Access Fund Ltd. on a $120 million joint investment in Sichuan-based mining company China Lumena New Materials Corp. In 2010, she was also part of the team advising U.S. research laboratory support services provider Charles River Laboratories International, Inc. on its $1.6 billion acquisition of Chinese competitor WuXi PharmaTech, Inc.

Chen joined Davis Polk as associate in 2002 and was made counsel in January last year. She is admitted to practice law in Hong Kong and New York.

Wilson Sonsini opened in Shanghai in 2007 and in Hong Kong in 2010.
