Shin & Kim
is set to open its first European office in Munich. The new office, which is to launch in October, will be led by Alexander Son, a German-born Korean.
Son is also a co-founding partner of intellectual property boutique firm
Remmertz Son Rechtsanwälte
in Munich, established in 2009. He will continue to be partner at Remmertz Son Rechtsanwälte, but will also double as Shin & Kim’s chief representative in Germany. As a German-qualified lawyer, Son cannot be a partner at a Korean firm, so he is a foreign attorney at Shin & Kim.
“My responsibility is to introduce a major Korean law firm to Europe,” says Son. “We are looking to establish alliances and non-exclusive relationships with some of Germany’s top ten firms.” Son declined to identify the German firms that Shin & Kim is currently in talks with.
Son says the new office will start by focusing on intellectual property matters but will seek to enter other corporate practice areas, especially mergers and acquisitions, through alliances.
According to Son, Shin & Kim has long planned a European expansion. Depending on the work flow for the first two years, the firm is looking to hire two or three more lawyers in Germany.
Shin & Kim’s other offices outside Korea are in Beijing and Shanghai.
