Indianapolis’ Sommer Barnard, which has about 100 lawyers, has announced it is merging with Cincinnati’s Taft, Stettinius & Hollister, which has about 220 lawyers. The merger is effective May 1. The new firm will have about 320 attorneys and offices in Cincinnati; Dayton, Cleveland and Columbus, Ohio; Covington, Ky.; Phoenix; Indianapolis; and Beijing. The Sommer Barnard name will transition to Taft. Robert Hicks, Sommer Barnard’s managing partner, said the merger will allow the firm to enhance the depth and breadth of its practice areas. “Taft is a larger version of Sommer Barnard, and follows the same guiding principles in servicing its clients and maintaining an outstanding workplace environment,” he said in a news release. As part of the merger, Hicks will become partner-in-charge of Taft’s two Indianapolis offices and join the new firm’s 10-member Executive Committee. Taft’s managing partner, Thomas Terp, spoke about the combined strengths of the two firms. “The leadership and professionals at Sommer Barnard share our values of personal service, creativity and performance-driven attitude, and are a great fit for us as we expand into the Indianapolis market,” he said in a news release. “They are superior lawyers who value teamwork and client service, and we are proud to have them join the Taft team.”
