A New York judge has rebuffed a man's bid to slash or eliminate the $4,000-a-month in maintenance he owes his jailed ex-wife. Scott May agreed to the payments at the time of his divorce, but he argued that Denise May does not need the money now that she is incarcerated for drug possession and her needs are being met by the state. Mr. May compared his former wife's situation to that of an ex-spouse who wins the lottery and no longer needs maintenance.

Although Scott May of Manhattan agreed to the payments in 2004 when he and Denise May were divorced, he argued that Ms. May does not need the money now that she is incarcerated for drug possession and her needs are being met by the state.
