A long battle to defend a $20 million medical malpractice verdict ended this week when the U.S. Supreme Court refused to review a series of decisions by Pennsylvania courts in a case against Temple University Hospital. In 2003, a Philadelphia jury found that a Temple student suffered brain damage because of a slow response by hospital staffers. In appeals of the $20 million verdict, lawyers for the hospital argued that the jury mistakenly included punitive damages in its compensatory damages award.
