Around the federal building, San Francisco criminal defense attorney Ian Loveseth is known as the Wolfman. For some time, the 54-year-old lawyer’s flowing gray locks and bushy beard fit the part.

But all that changed last month, when Loveseth allowed a retired police officer and a San Mateo, Calif., judge to take turns snipping off his hair at a fund-raising party at the local Mars Bar to raise money for kids with cancer.
