Converting legacy data from one system to another is like moving from one home to another.

Several friends of mine have recently moved into new homes. One decided to rent a moving van and do it himself, another hired a moving company and left it up to the company to take care of everything, and the third decided he would hire a moving company, but was extremely involved in every step of the process.
