When Alan Berkowitz left the National Labor Relations Board 25 years ago to become an employer-side labor lawyer, he had to define himself: "You can develop a reputation as being a hard-nosed union buster with no respect for unions," he says. "Or you develop a reputation as being fair minded." So when he started a new law firm, he focused on advising clients on how to work with, rather than against, organized labor. Therefore, it wasn't a huge leap for Berkowitz to move into mediation.
