For years, trade groups for the jewelry industry have been fighting to ban the use of the word "cultured" to describe laboratory-made gemstones, calling it misleading. To date, the Federal Trade Commission has declined to outlaw the term. But as lab-created gems reach unprecedented quality and gain market prominence, the jewelry industry has filed a new request for a ruling with the FTC and has hired Patton Boggs to lobby on the issue.
