The Supreme Court on Monday refused to review a case that undercuts Michigan's use of inmates' pensions to pay the costs of imprisonment. A federal appeals court ruled that pension managers can disregard directives from Michigan wardens to deposit inmates' pension money in their prison accounts. The DaimlerChrysler-UAW pension plan argued successfully that the state ran afoul of federal pension law, which bars transfers of benefits without the permission of the pensioner.
