In the 25 years since Mumia Abu-Jamal was convicted in the murder of a Philadelphia police officer, his case has become perhaps the world's most closely watched death penalty case. A judge overturned the death sentence in 2001 due to confusing jury instructions but upheld the conviction. In a 3rd Circuit appeal, prosecutors are now asking that the death sentence be reinstated, and Abu-Jamal's lawyers are seeking an entirely new trial, arguing there's evidence that prosecutors improperly struck black jurors.
