Cameras in courtrooms are a bonus for producers of TV judge shows such as "Divorce Court": better scouting. Production teams scour the country, and it helps if a jurisdiction allows TV cameras into its courts so they can find judges who "tend to be hams," though according to Judge Marilyn Milian of "The People's Court," the shows serve a higher purpose. "Most citizens do not get their legal advice from $300-an-hour lawyers. They get it from television court shows." But do TV judges lower the bar too much?

Miami-Dade Circuit Judge David Young was conducting a routine criminal court motion calendar recently when he had a moment that would have made for great tabloid TV.
Young told a weathered, wrinkled woman, who looked to be in her 50s, that she had successfully completed her pre-trial intervention program. Suddenly she began to weep. Out of the blue, she told the judge she had a bad heart and indicated that she had a scar on her chest.
