JAMS is the largest private alternative dispute resolution provider in the world, with revenues last year of about $99 million. In 1999, John J. "Jay" Welsh and 41 partners bought the company from an investment bank. Welsh, who is executive vice president and general counsel for JAMS, says the buyout was a career highlight, "because then JAMS was in the hands of people who do it, rather than investment bankers who wanted it to be like Federal Express -- the privatization of a government function."
