Baxter Healthcare Corp. has sent a cautionary letter to purchasers of two of its blood thinners after three newborns died following heparin injections 1,000 times greater than the recommended dose. Both products bear blue and white labels, although different shades of blue. "It's important to remind clinicians about the importance of reading a drug label before administering it," said a company spokeswoman. But a lawyer for the families of two of the infants said the labels alone weren't to blame.

The manufacturer of a blood thinner that hospital workers accidentally gave three infants last fall, resulting in the newborns’ deaths, has issued a letter warning health care workers to carefully read labels on the packages.
Baxter Healthcare Corp. mailed the cautionary letter last week to customers who purchased either of two heparin products in recent years. The Food and Drug Administration also posted the letter on its Web site.
