Arkansas farmers have sued two Bayer AG subsidiaries for negligence over contamination involving genetically altered rice. The rice strain, which is not approved for human consumption, was detected in trace amounts in crops last year, leading some countries to ban U.S. imports. It is not yet clear how the new claim fits into December's consolidation of more than a dozen similar lawsuits over genetically contaminated rice.

The company that developed a genetically altered strain of rice intended to resist a herbicide has been sued again by Arkansas rice farmers claiming negligence and seeking compensation.
The suit names Bayer CropScience AG, a subsidiary of Bayer AG, and Aventis CropScience USA Inc., also a Bayer subsidiary, as defendants. Bayer developed the strain of rice known as LLRICE 601, engineered to resist Bayer’s “Liberty” herbicide.
