A Johnston County, N.C., judge ordered Internet search engine Google on Wednesday to remove personal content accidentally posted online. Fearing identity theft, Johnston County officials asked Google on Monday to remove the information. Google responded that removal could take up to about five days, said county attorney Mark Payne, who then turned to the courts. Johnston County Superior Court Judge E. Lynn Johnson quickly approved a restraining order.

Though the information — including Social Security numbers, cell phone numbers and identifying details of some Johnston County taxpayers — had been removed from a county Web page, remnants of the page remained available through Google’s “cache” system, which temporarily stores online content.
