Southern District of New York U.S. Attorney Michael J. Garcia knew there would be some tough calls to make when he accepted an appointment to one of the most high-profile law enforcement jobs in the country.

Garcia, 45, was sworn in as U.S. Attorney on Sept. 6, 2005. During a little more than a year as the top federal prosecutor in Manhattan, he had to pull the plug on several celebrated cases to defend subordinates from almost unprecedented criticism over their handling of a non-prosecution agreement with KPMG.
